While Kasie West’s Pivot Point certainly contains enough goo-goo-eyes kind of puppy love to scream “I AM A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL!” its unique plot and (for the most part) likable characters make it an enjoyable read – even if you’re past the Noxzema generation.

The book centers on Addison (Addy), a teenager with the ability to see the search her future when given two choices. Living in a hidden compound where schools are designed to groom each student to develop their abilities and the government is run by other paranormals, Addy’s relatively normal paranormal existence is shaken when her parents announce they are getting a divorce. Worse, her dad is moving away from the compound and she must choose: follow her dad to go live amongst the “norms” or stay with her mom and everything she has ever known.

As Addy searches her two possible paths, she discovers her heartbreaking decision could have deadly consequences.

This is a series where a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief will do you well. These books are relatively short, but West uses the time efficiently to fill out important information while keeping the world building to a minimum. Basically, expect to know a lot about Addy and her daily interactions that move the plot forward, but don’t expect to learn the history of the compound or a detailed explanation of every minor character and his or her abilities or how exactly they have kept themselves hidden for so many years.

When it came to plot predictability, West does a great job of keeping her readers on their toes. There were plenty of original twists and turns that I truly did not see coming.

My only real complaint... I cannot stand books containing characters who find themselves in instalust. They give me hives and seizures, which then cause me to throw my Kindle across the room. I have to admit, I started getting itchy and twitchy quite a few times during Pivot Point (almost always when Duke was on the page), but there was just something there that kept me from giving up. There was something more there and I’m glad I (and my Kindle) made it through, because it was worth it.
